Toongabbie is a small suburb located in south-eastern Sydney, six miles east of Parramatta and eleven miles west of Rosedale. It lies within Wellington Shire Council and borders Latrobe City.
Location
Crown Toongabbie, situated on the northern fringes of Latrobe City and Wellington Shire, is a tranquil township with numerous community and sporting groups, wetlands, affordable properties, V/line bus/train connections and is one of the towns along the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail.
Toongabbie was named for an Aboriginal word meaning ‘place by the water’ and it came into being when Governor Philip granted seventeen land grants surrounding Thomas Davency’s cultivation ground between 1793-1795. These grants consisted of both public and private property.
Early in the 19th century, Toongabbie West began to flourish with small family farms occupying land from several acres up to thirty-four. Later that decade, a post office was established at Old Windsor Road; initially housed in a private home but eventually moving to Wentworth Avenue by 1922. Later still, Portico Parade eventually became home to Toongabbie Post Office in 1960.

Club History
Crown Toongabbie is a longstanding club in the local community with an impressive history and many members. It’s renowned for its great golf, superb facilities, and extensive renovations totalling $3.5M over several years that have set the bar for smaller local clubs.
The origin of the name ‘Toongabbie’ is uncertain. According to KFDB, it could have been derived from an Aboriginal word meaning either’meeting of the waters’, ‘near the water’ or ‘land of the hills near the water’. It could also have been named after Toongabbie township in New South Wales (NSW) where John King, an Australian Pastoral and Parliamentarian was born.
In 1849 King was managing the ‘Rosedale’ run, which stretched from Heyfield to Ridge property. Near Toongabbie there was a small hut called ‘Macfarlanes Tongaby hut’ located on the site of what is now Toongabbie. This hut served as a resting place for shepherds caring for Macfarlanes sheep in its north-west corner.
